基本解释别人往自己脸上吐唾沫，不擦掉而让它自干。形容受了污辱，极度容忍，不加反抗。

出处《新唐书 娄师德传》：“其弟守代州，辞之官，教之耐事。弟曰：‘有人唾面，洁之乃已。’师德曰：‘未也，洁之，是违其怒，正使自干耳。’”

唐朝监察御史娄师德率军抗击吐蕃进攻，八战八捷，深得武则天的器重，提拔为宰相。他为人处世宽宏大量，他问即将出任代州刺史的弟弟如何对待别人挑衅，弟弟说即使别人吐唾沫到脸上自己擦掉就行了，而他坚持要让唾沫自己干。
