残杯冷炙的典故

北齐的文学家颜之推，学识渊博，他有一部《颜氏家训》传世，内容是以儒家的传统思想作为立身治家之道。这部著作，对后世不少学者为人处世也有很大的影响。

《颜氏家训》中有一处告诫说，不能因为有点称赞，你就去受权贵驱使；处在低下的座位上，受取权贵施舍的屈辱。唐朝的大诗人杜甫，有一段时间就被迫在颜之推提到过的这种悲辛的处境里生活。

杜甫从小聪明好学，志高务实，但一直没有遇到施展才华的机会。直到三十五岁那年，早已盛负诗名的他才踏上通往京都长安的大道。考试完后，杜甫觉得文章写得得心应手。但他哪里知道，主持这次考试的大臣李林甫，根本不想选用贤才，而对有才能有胆识的人，一概采取排斥的态度。

杜甫没有料到自己会应试失败，内心非常痛苦，对前途悲观失望。从此，他流落长安，以“宾客”的身份出入于达官贵人之家，过着寄人篱下的生活。他时常陪王公大臣宴饮，席间吟诗赋辞助兴。这样做，一方面是为了维持生计，一方面也是希望得到权贵们的推荐，求得一官半职。
