基本解释传说东汉费长房见一老翁挂着一把壶卖药，然后就跳进壶里去。第二天，费去拜访他，和他一起入壶，但见房屋华丽，酒菜也很好。费于是向老翁学道，后来骑着老翁所给的竹杖回家，投杖于葛陂，变成一条龙。事见《后汉书·方术传下·费长房》。后以“掷杖成龙”为典，借指还乡。

古代传说费长房有一次看见一个老翁挂着一把壶卖药，卖完后就跳进壶中。第二天他去拜访老翁，和老翁一起进入壶内，壶中房舍华丽，应有尽有。他向老翁学道，后来骑着老翁给他的竹杖回家，把竹杖扔在葛陂，竹杖变成一条巨龙飞了回去。
