基本解释《公羊传 庄公二十四年》：“戎将侵曹，曹羁谏曰：‘戎众以无义，君请勿自敌也。’曹伯曰：‘不可。’三谏不从，遂去之，故君子以为得君臣之义也。”何休注引孔子曰：“所谓大臣者以道事君，不可则止，此之谓也。”后以“三谏之义”指事君之正道。

三谏之义的典故

春秋时期，北方的戎国将要侵略曹国，曹伯想亲自去迎敌。曹羁进谏说：“戎国人最不讲道义，国王您不能亲自去迎战。”曹伯说不行。曹羁进谏三次之后，尽到做臣子的道义之后就离开。后来曹军被戎狄打败。
