译文
渐渐远离了岭南瘴气蒸郁的地方，前面不远就是湘潭；身体多病，衰弱疲惫，内心痛苦不堪。
小儿女不知道自己是在逃难，硬是坚持说：眼前的风光景物，胜过江南。
注释
连州：治所在桂阳（今广东连县）；
阳山：县名，属连州，即今广东阳山县。
烟瘴：瘴气。此代指多瘴气的岭南地区。
湘潭，地名，治所在现在的湖南省。今湖南湘潭。
衰颓：指身体、精神等衰弱颓废。
避地：因逃避战争祸乱而移居他地。
强言：坚持说。
风物：风光景物。
连州阳山归路创作背景
建炎四年（1130），吕本中避乱南行，至连州。这首诗是他离开连州北归时作，抒发的是流亡途中的愁苦心情。

连州阳山归路鉴赏
首句点题，说明自己行程。“烟瘴”二字，切岭南气候，暗示自己因为避乱到连州，过着很艰苦的生活。次句具体写流亡生活对自己身体的摧残，连用“疾病”、“衰颓”、“不堪”三词，突出环境的恶劣，也隐隐将自己对国事的忧愁略加表露，语意低沉深挚。历来诗人都喜欢把情感寄托在对风物的吟咏之中，这两句诗切定“烟瘴”，从而直述种种不堪，也是采用这一手法。
三、四句笔锋忽转，不再写自己，转说小儿女不知道是逃难，坚持说眼前的景物比江南还好。这两句看似平常，实际上颇见构思之苦。诗以“避地”二字为主脑。眼前的风光，未必不如江南，关键是诗人此番是逃难而来，他又是江南人，见惯江南景色，如今颠沛流离，心情不佳，遥望故乡，战火不息，他怎会对眼前的景色赞赏呢？他又怎么会有心情欣赏眼前的秀丽景色呢？反过来，儿女年幼，没有大人那样的忧愁，自然感觉不同，说眼前的景色胜过江南。诗人这样写，正是通过小儿女的不解事，反衬自己的忧思，所以用“强言”二字为小儿女定位，道出心中无限凄楚。苏轼《纵笔》“小儿误喜朱颜在，一笑那知是酒红”，将心中的感慨借小儿的误会诉出，寓庄于谐，兴味无穷；杜甫《月夜》“遥怜小儿女，未解忆长安”，直接说小儿女无知，表示自己悲伤。吕本中这首诗也通过小儿女的不懂事来表达自己的感情，尽管取径不同，仍然很有可能是受了前人的启发。
诗前两句从正面直说，写得很凝重压抑；后两句从侧面衬托，表面上作轻描淡写，实际上将原本的痛苦渲染得更加深沉。吕本中诗自附于江西诗派，讲究“悟入”、“活法”，这首诗写得沉浑老成，就是从杜甫诗入径，而加上了自己的变化。
