明万历中，钱若赓守临江，有异政。有乡人持一鹅入市，寄店中后他往。还，索鹅，店主赖之，云：“群鹅我鹅也。”乡人不平，讼于官。公令人取店中鹅，计四只，各以一纸，给笔砚，分四处，令其供状。人莫不讶之。食顷，使人问鹅供不？答曰：“未。”又顷，下堂视之，曰：“状已供矣。”手指一鹅曰：“此乡人鹅。”众人怪之，守曰：“乡人鹅食草，粪色青；店鹅食谷粟，粪色黄。”店主服罪。
钱若赓断鹅译文及注释
译文
万历（明神宗年号）年间，钱若赓做临江郡的行政长官。有个乡下人拿着鹅到集市上，寄存在客店中，去别的地方。这个乡下人回来后索要自己的鹅，店主抵赖，说：“这群鹅都是我的鹅。”乡下人不服，到衙门去告状。钱若赓命人取来店里的鹅，共计四只，各给它们一张纸，笔、砚，分在四个地方，让它们写供状。人们没有不感到惊讶的。一顿饭的时间，派人问鹅写完供状没有？差役回答说：“没有。”又过了一顿饭的时间，到堂下看看，说：“鹅已经招供了。”并指着一只鹅说：“这是乡下人的鹅。”人们感到很奇怪，钱若赓说：“乡下人的鹅吃野草，粪便的颜色是青色的；店主的鹅吃谷物粮食，粪便的颜色是黄色的"。店主于是认罪。

钱若赓断鹅鉴赏
明朝万历年间，钱若赓就任临江府（今江西省清江县西临江镇）知府。
一天，一个乡下人拎了一只鹅到城里，为了办事方便，便将鹅寄存在一家旅店里。可是，当他办完事回来取鹅时，那店主竟耍赖说：“那群鹅是我养的，没你的鹅！”乡下人气愤与店主评理。但由于他没有文化，笨嘴拙舌的，辩不过伶牙俐齿的店主，只好跑到衙门去击鼓告状。
知府钱若赓细心听了乡下人的申述，立即命令手下人将店里的4只鹅全部取来，分关四处，每处配给一张纸、一支毛笔、一方砚台，说是让这些鹅招供各自属于谁。
鹅又怎么能自己招供？真是天大的笑话。城里的老百姓听到这个消息，都十分好奇地前来观看，连府中差役对钱若赓这种独特的审案方式也感到惊异和纳闷，无不替他捏了一把汗。
钱若赓似乎对案子漫不经心，刚布置完毕，就若无其事地用餐去了。过了一会儿，他派人出来探问；“鹅招供了没有？”
不久，钱若赓步出内室，亲自下堂巡视分关着的鹅，他看过以后，微笑着颔首捋须，自言自语：“嗯，好，好，它们已经招供啦。”差役们望过去，只见4只鹅除各自拉了些屎外，纸笔砚台丝毫未动。他们真的不知道钱知府卖的什么“关子”。突然，钱知府伸手指向其中的一只鹅，语气肯定地说道：“这只就是那乡下人的！”
钱若赓确实说对了。
钱若赓并不认识乡下人的鹅，他的判断是如何作出来的呢？原来，他是位富有生活经验的官吏。他知道，乡下的鹅吃的是野草，粪便是清淡的；城里的鹅吃的是谷子，粪便呈现黄色。要确定鹅的主人是乡下的还是城里的，只要查看一下鹅粪便一清二楚。
钱若赓把自己断案的依据讲出后，那个贪婪而又狡猾的店主顿时脸色煞白，连忙磕头谢罪。

褚人获，字稼轩，又字学稼，号石农，江苏长洲（今江苏苏州）人。明末清初文学家，一生未曾中试，也未曾做官。但他有多方面的才能，著作颇丰。传世的有《坚瓠集》、《读史随笔》、《退佳琐录》、《续蟹集》、《宋贤群辅录》等。他交游广泛，与尤侗、洪升、顾贞观、毛宗岗等清初著名作家来往甚密。
