人有负盐负薪者，同释重担息树阴。少时，且行，争一羊皮，各言藉背之物。久未果，遂讼于官。惠遣争者出，顾州纪纲曰：“以此羊皮可拷知主乎？”群下咸无答者。惠令人置羊皮席上，以杖击之，见少盐屑，曰：“得其实矣。”使争者视之，负薪者乃伏而就罪。

译文
有背着盐的和背着柴的人，两个人同时放下重担在树阴下休息。一会儿，将要走了，争一张羊皮，都说是自己垫肩的东西。久久没得出结果，就去报了官。李惠让他们出去，回头看州府的主簿说：“凭借这张羊皮能够查出它的主人吗?”下属官吏都不能回答。李惠叫人把羊皮放在坐席上面，用棒子敲打，看见（发现）有少许盐末，就说：“得到实情了!”再让争吵的双方进来看，背柴的人于是伏在地上承认了罪过。

李延寿，生卒年待考。唐代史学家，今河南安阳市人。贞观年间，做过太子典膳丞、崇贤馆学士，后任御史台主簿，官至符玺郎，兼修国史。他曾参加过官修的《隋书》、《五代史志》(即《经籍志》)、 《晋书》及当朝国史的修撰，还独立撰成《南史》、《北史》和《太宗政典》（已佚）。《新唐书》对两书评价颇高，称“其书颇有条理，删落酿辞，过本书远甚。”。
