西山没有庞公那般难以接近的孤傲之气。只要城楼所在之处他便能来到城府之中。山林绵延千里，满目苍翠，让人不禁想将白发染翠蓝。
都说我早生华发是因愁绪多。劝我喝酒以销愁。酒喝得再多，也不能销愁，醒来白发未减，人依旧在愁中衰老。

庞公：即庞德公，据《尚友录》：庞德公居岘山，未尝入城府。荆州刺史刘表几次请他出来做官，他都拒绝，并让刘表站在一边不理，对他自己妻子却“相敬如宾”。诸葛亮去拜访他，庞德公开始几次也只是让亮一人拜在堂下，不教他起来，因此以其踞傲而闻名于世。

古代诗人常以人与自然的默契，来表达一种超旷的情致。李白有“相看两不厌，惟有敬亭山”，辛弃疾有“我见青山多妩媚，料青山见我应如是”。既是一种谐趣，又是作者自我意识对象化的巧妙修辞。“西山不似庞公傲，城府有楼山便倒”同样表现出这样一种超迈和诙谐的情绪。作者将西山拟人化，又将拟人化的山拿来与历史上有名的怪诞人物进行比较，思致独擅，奇趣横生。
这里作者并未说西山如何高峻，如何巍峨或如何秀丽，仅通过它的“不傲”来写其与人亲近。这种写山手法，有创造，有风趣，较之王安石“两山排闼送青来”又高出一筹。首句在“西山”之外，叠加出“庞公”的形象，“西山”为显形，“庞公”为隐形，造成一种独到的意象叠加效果。而联系这一对本来风马牛不相及的意象之媒介（中介），就是对待城府的态度。庞公，即庞德公，据《尚友录》：庞德公居岘山，未尝入城府。荆州刺史刘表几次请他出来做官，他都拒绝，并让刘表站在一边不理，对他自己妻子却“相敬如宾”。诸葛亮去拜访他，庞德公开始几次也只是让亮一人拜在堂下，不教他起来，因此以其踞傲而闻名于世。后携妻子隐鹿门山。“西山”却与庞公不同，“城府”只要有楼，它便可入城府来，按照常理，是人伫立楼头，目光投向西山，才发现它的存在。词人将这种视觉感受逆转，说是西山来到了城府之中，让读者在一句之中得到一种视点迁移引起的情感之波的回返往复，增强了诗句审美感应的层次和深度，且把山与人的亲近程度表述得准确和完满。词人写山与自然的热爱与亲近，与上面提到的太白、稼轩、半山类似诗句命意相同，与深隐山森的“庞公”实则同趣。
第三、四句，由西山的“青”，想到自己的白发，由头上白发想到去染翠蓝的晴岚。辛疾疾有“青山不染白髭须”之句，作者实际与辛词句意相同，不过是反说罢了。这里，作者放开浪漫的意马之缰，夸张地表达恨“早生华发”的强烈情绪，思致独到，言辞直率却具艺术内蕴。言外透露出爱山的缘由：投身大自然的怀抱，山林青青千里，可使人感受到一种浓郁的青春气息，遂觉得头上的白色可以移到它上面，它的青色可以移到自己头上。
下片承“华发”申说，旁人谓词人早生华发是因发愁，遂劝他喝醉解之。借酒浇愁，古人说得很多。曹操说“何以解忧，惟有杜康”，杜康，即酒。李白有“抽刀断水水更流，举杯销愁愁更愁”，其《将进酒》又云：“五花马，千金裘，呼儿将出换美酒，与尔同销万古愁。”下阙首起两句便是沿前人思维定势，将诗意提起。第三句作一顿挫，一晚上便喝了千杯酒，当然这是夸张之辞，极言豪饮之多，最后作一反跌：酒喝得再多，也不能销愁，醒来白发未减，人依旧在愁中衰老。
这是一首谐谑风格的词作。无缠绵悱恻绮罗香泽之态，亦无豪纵奔放金戈铁马之势，它只是以疏淡的笔致，表现一种旷放的情感。虽有叹老之意，却全无伤感之怀。写法上，舍去一切背景，仿佛白纸上作画，仅用线条表现情绪。上片以青山与自己白发作对比写自己的“老”；下片用酒与愁的关系强调愁的执著，亦未离开一个“老”字。全词观之，愁与老的根源，华发乃老的标志，青山乃华民的隐衬，意脉连贯，疏中见密，自然浑成，淡而有味。为何而愁，全未说破，只让读者朦胧见到一种排遣不了，纠缠如蛇的愁雾愁雰愁云而已，遂给人一种超脱之感，放达之感。这是典型的元人风致，元人格调和元人散曲笔法。

刘因（1249～1293） 元代著名理学家、诗人。字梦吉，号静修。初名骃，字梦骥。雄州容城（今河北容城县）人。3 岁识字，6岁能诗，10岁能文，落笔惊人。年刚20，才华出众，性不苟合。家贫教授生徒，皆有成就。因爱诸葛亮“静以修身”之语，题所居为“静修”。元世祖至元十九年(1282)应召入朝，为承德郎、右赞善大夫。不久借口母病辞官归。母死后居丧在家。至元二十八年，忽必烈再度遣使召刘因为官，他以疾辞。死后追赠翰林学士、资政大夫、上护军、追封“容城郡公”，谥“文靖”。明朝，县官乡绅为刘因建祠堂。
