译文
谁能够把你挽留？可叹人生在几番伤感离别之后就匆匆老去，最令人思念的，是一起在西窗下秉烛夜谈，听你讲家乡的事情。没想到这次相聚却如此短暂，长江滚滚，落叶纷纷，大雁哀鸣着向远方飞去。黄叶飘落，秋天的景象如此凄凉。
听你说要离去，我平添了许多愁绪一但你想回乡还是回去吧，总好过勉强寄居在京城凄凉的寺院里。你两鬓斑白来京城求取功名却不能及第，儿女在家乡思念着你，我一直为你的落魄伤心不已。看来无论古今，才华与命运总是彼此相背离，这对不公命运的满腔怨恨，又能够对谁说呢？
注释
金缕曲：词牌名。又名《贺新郎》《乳燕飞》，亦作曲牌名。一百十六字，前后片各六仄韵。
姜西溟（míng）：即姜宸英（1628一1699年），字西溟，又字湛园，浙江慈溪人，善辞章，尤工书画，与纳兰有交游。
迟暮：年老。
“衮衮（gǔn）”句：此句化用杜甫《登高》：无边落木萧萧下，不尽长江滚滚来。衮衮，即“滚滚”。
栖迟梵（fàn）字：栖迟，滞留，游息；梵宇，寺庙。
“两鬓”句：两鬓飘萧，头发斑白；未遇，没有被人赏识。姜西溟于康熙三十六年（1697年）中进士，年已七十。
裘敝（qíu bì）：即敝裘，破烂的农服。典出《战国策·秦策》：苏秦“说秦王，书十上而说不行，黑貂之裘敝，黄金百斤尽”。

词大约作于康熙十八年（1679年）。是年，西溟丁母忧，南归奔丧。纳兰赋此词以慰勉之，时年二十五岁。

上片借道别叙说人间的聚散离合，表明惜别之情。开篇道明送别之意，已经说好就将归去，以为迎来送往，是一件令人感伤的事。人的一生竟然就那么短促，几番离合，便到了迟暮之年。一生中最让人津津乐道是，西窗下翦烛夜话，在一起追忆巴山夜雨时的情景。而这种相聚，却只是暂时的。滚滚长江，萧萧落木。转眼间，大雁哀鸣，遥天飞去，又是一个送别的季节。黄叶下，秋天已是这么深沉、这么厚重。
下片就对方的遭遇，表达观感，写慰藉之意。对秋景的描写，并用“白雁哀鸣去”隐射行人，更加深加浓了惜别恋友的深情。过片一句转入对西溟身世的怅惋和同情。故下片一面抒写痛惜西溟之“落魄”、“未遇”，一而又诚挚地劝慰他家中“有解忆”之儿女，可享天伦，这总比淹留冷烟寒月的寺庙要好，而且“信古来、才命真相负”，更以达观的人生态度相慰。结句则是再表惜别之意。此中借典形容，层层转进，真纯深挚的情意确是感人。
大体上看，上片、下片，泛写与专指，在材料分配上，显得很分明，但其组合也相当严谨。这就是一个“归”字的贯穿。这一个“归”字，在换头位置，承上启下。既是上片所说离合的一个因素，又是下片所说愁绪的中介。由于“归”，故有聚散；由于“归”，故有烦恼。其一般和个别的关系，也就集中体现在与相言别的人物身上。所谓以文为词，当中意脉仍十分清晰。

纳兰性德（1655－1685），满洲人，字容若，号楞伽山人，清代最著名词人之一。其诗词“纳兰词”在清代以至整个中国词坛上都享有很高的声誉，在中国文学史上也占有光采夺目的一席。他生活于满汉融合时期，其贵族家庭兴衰具有关联于王朝国事的典型性。虽侍从帝王，却向往经历平淡。特殊的生活环境背景，加之个人的超逸才华，使其诗词创作呈现出独特的个性和鲜明的艺术风格。流传至今的《木兰花令·拟古决绝词》——“人生若只如初见，何事秋风悲画扇？等闲变却故人心，却道故人心易变。”富于意境，是其众多代表作之一。
