宿习修来得慧根，多闻第一却忘言。
自从七祖传心印，不要三乘入便门。
东泛沧江寻古迹，西归紫阁出尘喧。
河南白尹大檀越，好把真经相对翻。
送宗密上人归南山草堂寺因谒河南尹白侍郎鉴赏
与柳宗元相比，刘禹锡就荣幸得多。他二人虽同时遭贬，但柳宗元生性沉郁，而刘禹锡则生性达观。柳宗元多病，刘禹锡康健。苏东坡评柳宗元“发纤浓于古简，寄至味于淡泊。”而刘禹锡在此，则还多了一团生机和气。所以柳宗元年仅四十七而逝，刘禹锡则寿高七十余，比白居易略差一点。柳宗元也没有如刘、白二人，得以交圭峰宗密大师这样佛教中的泰山北斗，也不如李翱那样得以结交药山唯俨这样的禅林宗匠。这是刘禹锡在安徽和州当太守时送别圭峰大师时所作的诗，并以此诗作为“介绍信”，介绍给白居易。圭峰大师与刘禹锡、白居易还有一段交往，的确是鲜为人知。
“宿习修来得慧根，多闻第一忘却言。”这里，刘禹锡盛赞圭峰大师累世修行，得到了极高的智慧。在释迦牟尼佛的众多弟子中，阿难尊者号称“多闻”第一，所有的佛经，都是经他背诵出来的。圭峰大师是华严宗的五祖，对佛教理论在当时是天下独步。同时圭峰大师还是禅宗荷泽宗的第五代祖师。这两重崇高的地位和卓绝的修行，当然堪称“多闻第一”又“忘却言”了。
这里“七祖”指六祖大师的弟子荷泽神会禅师。因神会禅师的努力，南禅击败了北禅，确立了六祖的地位，而他也在后来被唐德宗“钦封”为“七祖”。“便门”是方便法门的简称。禅宗讲“教外别传”，对“三乘”教法不那么看重，而注重“直指人心”的方便法门。
圭峰大师曾一度离开陕西卢县草堂寺到江南游历。自从隋炀帝开大运河以来，经洛阳汴河，在泗州入淮河，又经淮安、扬州入长江。故舟行极为方便。圭峰大师此行当在刘禹锡任和州刺史的太和（唐文宗年号，827—836）年间。长安到江南称“东泛”，再回长安自然为“西归”了。草堂寺为姚秦时鸠摩罗什大师译经故地，现今仍为中国佛教祖庭之一，地处终南山北麓。
白居易以侍郎身分，居河南府尹，地位极高，信佛之诚，又超过刘禹锡和柳宗元。白居易还与圭峰师叔洛阳神照禅师熟识，圭峰大师在洛阳与白居易相会，想必就更加热闹了。一起谈佛论禅，必然相契。

刘禹锡（772－842），字梦得，汉族，中国唐朝彭城（今徐州）人，祖籍洛阳，唐朝文学家，哲学家，自称是汉中山靖王后裔，曾任监察御史，是王叔文政治改革集团的一员。唐代中晚期著名诗人，有“诗豪”之称。他的家庭是一个世代以儒学相传的书香门第。政治上主张革新，是王叔文派政治革新活动的中心人物之一。后来永贞革新失败被贬为朗州司马（今湖南常德）。据湖南常德历史学家、收藏家周新国先生考证刘禹锡被贬为朗州司马其间写了著名的“汉寿城春望”。
