临蒸且莫叹炎方，为报秋来雁几行。
译文：你处在临蒸，也用不着叹息身处在炎热的南方，秋天到来时还有几行大雁到你那里栖息。
注释：临蒸：衡阳旧名，县城东傍湘江，北背蒸水。炎方：南方炎热之地。雁几行：衡阳有回雁峰，相传每年秋天大雁南飞至此不再南去，到第二年春天再往北飞。这里一则劝慰卢衡州莫叹南方之炎热，一则询问秋来大雁来衡的景况。
林邑东回山似戟，牂牁南下水如汤。
译文：真正的南方，像林邑，曲折的山势像剑戟般高耸；像牂牁，南流的水像开水一样滚烫。
注释：林邑：古地名，治所北临骥州，在今越南境内。戟：古兵嚣的一种，长杆顶端装有月牙形的利刃。牂牁：古郡名，辖境约当今贵州大部、云南东部，广西西北部。又，水名，即牂牁江，流经广西，至广州入海。汤：热水。
蒹葭淅沥含秋雾，橘柚玲珑透夕阳。
译文：正是淅沥的芦苇含着秋雾的时候，也正是玲珑的橘柚透着夕阳的色泽之际。
注释：蒹葭：一名荻，即芦苇。渐沥：风吹芦苇的声响。柚：橘类果木，即柚子。
非是白蘋洲畔客，还将远意问潇湘。
译文：我虽然不是江南白苹洲般的游客，仍然寄上这首诗，来表达对潇湘水边的你的遥远祝福。
注释：白蘋洲畔客：指南朝诗人柳恽，柳恽字文畅，河东人，工诗善琴，后贬吴兴太守。潇湘：湖南境内的两条水名，这里代指在湖南为官的卢衡州。

柳宗元（773年－819年），字子厚，唐代河东（今山西运城）人，杰出诗人、哲学家、儒学家乃至成就卓著的政治家，唐宋八大家之一。著名作品有《永州八记》等六百多篇文章，经后人辑为三十卷，名为《柳河东集》。因为他是河东人，人称柳河东，又因终于柳州刺史任上，又称柳柳州。柳宗元与韩愈同为中唐古文运动的领导人物，并称“韩柳”。在中国文化史上，其诗、文成就均极为杰出，可谓一时难分轩轾。
