西陆动凉气，惊乌号北林。
译文：秋天刮起了凉风，受惊的乌鸦在北面的树林里叫个不停。
注释：西陆：秋天。西陆本为星宿名，指昴宿。
栖息岂殊性，集枯安可任。
译文：难道是乌鸦栖息的习性与众不同，它们停集在枯枝上又怎能靠它安身？
注释：岂：难道，怎么。殊：不同的，特别的。性：习性。集：群鸟停聚在树上。安：何，怎么。任：凭靠，依托。
鸿鹄去不返，勾吴阻且深。
译文：天鹅一去再也不能回返，去勾吴的道路山险水又深。
注释：鸿鹄：天鹅。勾吴：古国名，在今浙江、江苏一带。勾，发音词头，无义。阻：险。
徒嗟日沈湎，丸鼓骛奇音。
译文：人们只能嗟叹汉元帝一天天沉溺享乐，他竟然用铜丸击鼓来追求奇特的声音。
注释：徒：白白地，仅仅。日：一天天地。沈湎：沉溺，迷恋。丸鼓：用铜丸击鼓。骛：追求。
东海久摇荡，南风已骎骎。
译文：东海早就波涛汹涌，南风也已劲猛急紧。
注释：骎骎：疾速，急迫。
坐使青天暮，小星愁太阴。
译文：致使青天白日变成了黑夜昏暮，三五颗小星使得月亮忧愁而隐。
注释：坐：因而，导致。太阴：月亮。
众情嗜奸利，居货捐千金。
译文：世俗内心最喜好的是奸诈谋利，他们困积奇货，一掷千金。
注释：众：世俗者。情：内心。居：囤积，储存。捐：舍弃，献出，此处为“花费”。
危根一以振，齐斧来相寻。
译文：高大的树木一旦挺立起来，锋利的刀斧就把它们追寻。
注释：危：高。根：树根，这儿借代为树木。一：一旦。振：直挺。齐斧：用于征伐之斧。齐，通斋。寻：追逐，跟踪而至。
揽衣中夜起，感物涕盈襟。
译文：我半夜披衣起来徘徊，感伤时事，不禁热泪满襟。
注释：揽衣：披衣。物：景物、时事、世事。涕：眼泪。
微霜众所践，谁念岁寒心。
译文：尽管人们都能踏着薄薄的寒霜行走，可谁又想到那不畏严寒的松柏的坚贞？
注释：岁寒心：年终严寒时松柏挺立不屈的精神。
旭日照寒野，鸒斯起蒿莱。
译文：早晨的太阳照耀着寒冷的原野，一群乌鸦从草丛飞了出来。
注释：鸒斯：乌鸦。蒿莱：草丛。
啁啾有馀乐，飞舞西陵隈。
译文：它们哑哑欢叫，非常快活，飞舞到西边的山弯一带。
注释：啁啾：鸟叫声。馀：多余的，十二分的。陵：山丘。隈：山势弯曲的地方。
回风旦夕至，零叶委陈荄。
译文：无情的旋风迟早就要来到，把枯枝败叶吹落在腐草陈荄。
注释：回风：旋风。旦夕：早晚间，迟早。委：堆落。陈荄：腐烂的草根。陈，腐烂的。荄，草根。
所栖不足恃，鹰隼纵横来。
译文：栖居的草丛决不能够安身，鹰隼猛扑下来，无可逃灾。
注释：恃：依靠。隼：鹗，鹞鹰。纵横：迅猛恣肆。

柳宗元（773年－819年），字子厚，唐代河东（今山西运城）人，杰出诗人、哲学家、儒学家乃至成就卓著的政治家，唐宋八大家之一。著名作品有《永州八记》等六百多篇文章，经后人辑为三十卷，名为《柳河东集》。因为他是河东人，人称柳河东，又因终于柳州刺史任上，又称柳柳州。柳宗元与韩愈同为中唐古文运动的领导人物，并称“韩柳”。在中国文化史上，其诗、文成就均极为杰出，可谓一时难分轩轾。
