昔年因读李白杜甫诗，长恨二人不相从。
译文：当年因为读了李白杜甫的诗，常常遗憾他们不常在一起。
注释：不相从：不常在一起。
吾与东野生并世，如何复蹑二子踪。
译文：我与孟郊是同一时代的人，为什么也像他们一样别多聚少呢？
注释：并世：同一时代。并，同。如何复蹑二子踪：为什么又像他们那样（别多聚少）呢？复，又。蹑，踩、追随。二子，指李白和杜甫。
东野不得官，白首夸龙钟。
译文：孟郊正等待朝廷任命新职，年老的时候号称行动笨拙。
注释：不得官：写诗时孟郊正等待朝廷任命新职。夸：号称。龙钟：年老行动笨拙之态。
韩子稍奸黠，自惭青蒿倚长松。
译文：我稍微狡猾了些，惭愧地像小草依附长松一样依附着孟郊的才华。
注释：韩子：韩愈自指。奸黠：狡猾。青蒿：小草，韩愈自比。长松：比喻孟郊有乔木之才。
低头拜东野，原得终始如駏蛩。
译文：低下头拜见孟郊，与他相互依存。
注释：駏蛩：古代传说中的一种动物，常背负另一种叫“蟨”的动物行走，蟨则为它取甘草吃，它们互相帮助为生。
东野不回头，有如寸筳撞巨钟。
译文：孟郊却不回头，就像用小树枝去撞钟一样。
注释：寸筳：小竹枝，这里也是韩愈自比。巨钟：比喻孟郊。
吾愿身为云，东野变为龙。
译文：我愿意变身成为云，孟郊变成龙。
四方上下逐东野，虽有离别无由逢？
译文：四方上下追逐着孟郊，即使有离别也常常相逢。
注释：虽有离别何由逢：即使人世间有离别这回事也碰不上了。逢，遇。

韩愈（768～824）字退之，唐代文学家、哲学家、思想家，河阳（今河南省焦作孟州市）人，汉族。祖籍河北昌黎，世称韩昌黎。晚年任吏部侍郎，又称韩吏部。谥号“文”，又称韩文公。他与柳宗元同为唐代古文运动的倡导者，主张学习先秦两汉的散文语言，破骈为散，扩大文言文的表达功能。宋代苏轼称他“文起八代之衰”，明人推他为唐宋八大家之首，与柳宗元并称“韩柳”，有“文章巨公”和“百代文宗”之名，作品都收在《昌黎先生集》里。韩愈在思想上是中国“道统”观念的确立者，是尊儒反佛的里程碑式人物。
