予至滑之三月，即其署东偏之室，治为燕私之居，而名曰画舫斋。斋广一室，其深七室，以户相通，凡入予室者，如入乎舟中。其温室之奥，则穴其上以为明；其虚室之疏以达，则槛栏其两旁以为坐立之倚。凡偃休于吾斋者，又如偃休乎舟中。山石崷崒，佳花美木之植列于两檐之外，又似泛乎中流，而左山右林之相映，皆可爱者。因以舟名焉。
译文： 我到滑县三个月后，就在官署东边的偏室，修建了我休憩的居所，并把它命名为“画舫斋”。画舫斋的宽度有一间屋子那么大，它的深度有七间屋子那么长，用门将房子连通起来，凡进入我的画舫斋，就好像到了船上。屋子深暗的地方，就在顶部凿洞开窗，使屋子明亮起来；空疏通达的地方，就在两边砌上栏杆，作为坐立的依靠。凡是在斋中休息，就像在船上休息一样。屋外山石高峻，各种美丽的花草树木种植在屋檐的两边，人在斋中又像是泛舟江中，左右两边的山林交相辉映，都令人喜爱。于是就用“舟”来命名我的居室。
注释： 滑：滑州，今河南滑县。署：官署，衙门。治：修理。燕私之居：歇息的地方。广一室，其深七室：一间房子宽，七间房子深。温室之奥：指画舫斋最里面的房子。奥：深处。其虚室之疏以达：靠外边的房子没有墙壁，疏朗而通达。蝤崒：峥嵘高峻的样子。泛乎中流：船行在大河之间。
《周易》之象，至于履险蹈难，必曰涉川。盖舟之为物，所以济难而非安居之用也。今予治斋于署，以为燕安，而反以舟名之，岂不戾哉？矧予又尝以罪谪，走江湖间，自汴绝淮，浮于大江，至于巴峡，转而以入于汉沔，计其水行几万余里。其羁穷不幸，而卒遭风波之恐，往往叫号神明以脱须臾之命者，数矣。当其恐时，顾视前后凡舟之人，非为商贾，则必仕宦。因窃自叹，以谓非冒利与不得已者，孰肯至是哉？赖天之惠，全活其生。今得除去宿负，列官于朝，以来是州，饱廪食而安署居。追思曩时山川所历，舟楫之危，蛟鼋之出没，波涛之汹欻，宜其寝惊而梦愕。而乃忘其险阻，犹以舟名其斋，岂真乐于舟居者邪！
译文： 《周易》的卦象，涉及到经历艰难险阻的，就一定称作“涉川”。这是因为“舟”这种物件，是用来渡过难关而不是用来安居的。我在官署修建的居所，是用作闲居休憩的，却反而用“舟”来命名，这难道不违背常理吗？况且我又曾经因为获罪被贬谪，行走在江湖之间，从汴河渡过淮河，又沿长江漂流，到了巴峡，再辗转进入汉水和沔水，总计水路行程几万里。其间途路蹇阻多难，突然遭遇大风浪恐惧的时候，常常呼唤神灵保佑以使自己脱离危险而保瞬间性命的情形，已经有很多次了。当恐惧的时候，我环顾船上的人，不是商人就是做官的，于是暗自感叹，认为如果不是贪图利益和身不由己的人，谁愿意到这里来呢？全靠老天的眷顾，我得以保全性命。我能够除去以往的罪责，在朝廷任职，来到这滑州，饱吃官粮，安居官署。回想起从前我辗转高山大河的经历，乘船的危险，蛟龙龟鼍的出没，波涛的汹涌，总使我在睡梦中惊醒。而我却忘记了自己遭受的艰难险阻，还用“舟”来命名我的斋室，难道我真的喜欢在船上生活吗？
注释： 戾：乖戾，悖谬。羁穷不幸：仕途挫折，颠沛流徙。叫号神明：呼唤上天保佑。数：屡次。除去宿负：免去以前受贬谪的罪愆。
然予闻古之人，有逃世远去江湖之上，终身而不肯反者，其必有所乐也。苟非冒利于险，有罪而不得已，使顺风恬波，傲然枕席之上，一日而千里，则舟之行岂不乐哉！顾予诚有所未暇，而舫者宴嬉之舟也，姑以名予斋，奚曰不宜？
译文： 然而我听说古时候的人，有的逃离世俗远离江湖而逍遥，终身都不肯再返回尘世之中，他们肯定有感到快乐的地方。如果不是在危险当中求得利益，如果不是因为犯罪而身不由己，而是在船上顺风而行，风平浪静，傲然倚躺，一目之内就可以走千里的路程，那么乘船而行难道不是一件乐事吗？考虑到我确实没有空闲的时间，而“舫”是一种休憩娱乐的船，姑且用此命名我的斋室，为什么说不合适呢？
注释： 诚有所未暇：意思是世乱方甚，自己应该做一番事业，还不能脱身世外，漫游江湖。奚曰不宜：怎么能说不对呢？
予友蔡君谟善大书，颇怪伟，将乞大字以题于楹。惧其疑予之所以名斋者，故具以云。又因以置于壁。
译文： 我的朋友蔡君谟擅长写大字，字体甚为奇崛雄伟，我请求他在斋室的门楣上题写大字，可是怕他对我的斋室的命名有疑问，所以写了这篇文章作详细解释，并把它挂在墙上。
注释： 蔡君谟：蔡襄，字君谟，作者朋友，当时以书法著名。置于壁：刻石砌入墙壁间。

欧阳修（1007－1072），字永叔，号醉翁，晚号“六一居士”。汉族，吉州永丰（今江西省永丰县）人，因吉州原属庐陵郡，以“庐陵欧阳修”自居。谥号文忠，世称欧阳文忠公。北宋政治家、文学家、史学家，与韩愈、柳宗元、王安石、苏洵、苏轼、苏辙、曾巩合称“唐宋八大家”。后人又将其与韩愈、柳宗元和苏轼合称“千古文章四大家”。
